Commercial trucking coverage

Primary liability for trucks that work.

If one of your trucks is involved in an accident, liability coverage pays for the other party's injuries and property damage, and for your defense. It is the coverage the FMCSA requires before an authority is active, and the one shippers and brokers ask about first.

What it covers

Liability Insurance, in plain terms.

  • Bodily injury and property damage to others caused by your trucks
  • Legal defense and settlement costs
  • Limits sized to your authority: the federal minimum is $750,000 for most for-hire freight, and most shippers ask for $1,000,000
  • General liability for what happens off the road: loading docks, yards, customer sites

Who needs it

Owner-operators under their own authority, small and mid-size fleets, and carriers who need certificates fast.

Questions

How much liability coverage does a trucking company need?

The FMCSA minimum for for-hire carriers of non-hazardous freight in vehicles over 10,001 lbs is $750,000. Most shippers and brokers require $1,000,000, and hazmat operations need more. We quote the limit your contracts call for.

Is general liability the same as auto liability?

No. Auto liability covers the truck on the road. General liability covers injuries and damage that happen away from the vehicle, such as at a loading dock or a customer's property. Many carriers carry both.
